Compensation in Conservation Areas

a-araucaria

Rural landowners who do not have sufficient legal reserve can comply through the donation, to the government, of an area located inside Conservation Areas pending expropriation.

Many official conservation areas in Brazil still includes privately-owned farms within them. Lack of financial resources have prevented the process of expropriation of these areas by the government. The donation of farms inside conservation areas can be used to compensate of a deficit of legal reserves elsewhere, assisting the government in consolidating national parks.

BVRio has developed a market to facilitate the use of this mechanism, by connecting landowners in conservation areas and farmers with deficit of legal reserve. This mechanism results in the consolidation of conservation areas and the compliance with the legal reserve obligation in productive farm lands.

Download here the "Private Property in Public Conservation Areas" manual.

Through BVRio Platform, owners of land located in Conservation Areas can offer their areas and enter into agreements with farmers with Legal Reserve deficit, with a view to donating the area and offsetting the Legal Reserve of another rural property.

Once the compensation has been approved by the competent environmental agency, the donation of the area to the entity responsible for the Conservation Area is formalized. The beneficiary of the Legal Reserve compensation pays the holder of the donated area a price previously agreed between the parties.

Visit the BVRio Plataform and engage this market.
