It also makes the case for investing in solutions that recover value, strengthen local economies and keep plastic out of nature.

According to EA Earth Action’s 2026 model, Sunday, 6 September marked the projected Global Plastic Overshoot Day: the point when the plastic waste generated this year overtakes the capacity of existing systems to manage it properly.

This is not a live count taken on a single day. It translates annual waste data into a clear measure of the gap between what we discard and what our systems can safely handle. In 2026, the model projects that the world will generate 227 million tonnes of plastic waste, of which nearly 72 million tonnes will be mismanaged and at risk of reaching nature.

Brazil crossed this line earlier, on 13 August. From these dates onwards, waste systems are effectively operating in the red: more plastic waste is being generated than existing infrastructure can collect, sort, process or dispose of safely.

The countries and communities where systems fall behind carry the cost. Valuable materials are lost, pollution reaches neighbourhoods, rivers and oceans, and the people working to recover waste are left without the infrastructure and finance they need. Companies also face growing pressure to take responsibility for the waste their products create.

The choice is whether we continue paying for pollution or invest in systems that keep materials in the economy. Whatever happens in international negotiations, implementation cannot wait.

Investing in systems that work

BVRio tests practical solutions in real-world settings, builds evidence and turns what works into models that can be expanded and replicated. Through our work on waste management and the circular economy, we have already mobilised US$4.2 million for circular economy initiatives.

For companies, donors and impact funders, the value can be measured: more waste recovered, stronger local capacity, greater traceability and accountability, and clear social and environmental benefits.

Finding projects with the potential for scale. The relaunched Circular Action Hub is the world’s largest directory of local waste management initiatives seeking support. It brings together more than 130 projects in over 40 countries, with the combined potential to recover and process more than 630,000 tonnes of waste each year.

Paying for verified results. Our Circular Credits Mechanism enables organisations to fund the verified collection, sorting and proper handling of recyclable waste, linking funding to results that can be measured and reported.

Helping producers meet their responsibilities. Extended Producer Responsibility, or EPR, requires producers to take responsibility for their products and packaging after use. BVRio has supported 11 countries in developing EPR legislation and provides EPR advice to governments and businesses designing and implementing effective systems.

Integrating the recycling chain through traceability. Kolekt has registered more than 20,000 users and recorded 34 million kg of recovered waste. Its digital tools connect waste pickers, collectors, processors and buyers, creating traceable records from collection to sale.

Strengthening local recycling capacity. BVRio secured R$6.7 million to improve infrastructure, transport and technical support for waste picker cooperatives in Brazil.

Creating a fundable model for ocean protection. Through Fishing for Litter, local artisanal fishers have removed more than 600 tonnes of waste from Guanabara Bay and its mangroves. The programme turns marine clean-up into a measurable service that protects coastal ecosystems and creates additional income for fishing communities.

Fund the fix

This funding delivers more than clean-up. It can help companies meet their responsibilities, strengthen local recycling supply chains and build the infrastructure required to prevent plastic from becoming pollution.

Funders, philanthropists and corporate partners can explore opportunities through the relaunched Circular Action Hub or partner directly with BVRio to take proven models further.

Every well-directed investment can recover more value, keep more plastic out of nature and improve the income and working conditions of the people delivering these essential solutions. Together, we can push Plastic Overshoot Day further along the calendar.

Plastic Overshoot Day data source: EA Earth Action, Plastic Overshoot Day Report 2026.

Plastic Overshoot Day warns that waste systems are falling behind.
