BVRio Launches Circular Action Hub to Catalyse Innovative Finance for Circular Economy<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Waste leakage and particularly plastic pollution is an alarming global problem, but the solutions must be delivered locally. Circular Action Hub connects global sources of finance with ambitious and scalable local projects to support and accelerate circular waste management action via performance-based payments for an inclusive circular economy.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

11 August 2020, Rio de Janeiro and Oxford<\/span><\/em>. <\/span>BVRio<\/span><\/strong> launches today Circular Action Hub<\/span><\/strong>,\u00a0an online platform that connects circular economy projects and initiatives with supporting organisations (corporates, donors, impact investors). Through the Hub, BVRio also introduces the Circular Credits Mechanism – a system of performance-based payments for environmental services of circularity, that aims at fostering inclusivity and wider social participation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Circular Action Hub<\/span><\/strong><\/a> was originally created to host projects from the\u00a0<\/span>3R Initiative<\/span><\/a>\u00a0founded by BVRio, Verra, Nestl\u00e9, Danone, Tetra Pak<\/em> and others. BVRio is now expanding the Hub to promote a wider range of projects (large, small, greenfield, existing) with various funding needs (direct sponsorship, impact investment, performance-based payments), waste materials (plastics, beverage cartons, metals, glass, tyres, e-waste, etc.), and activities (waste collection and recovery, recycling, capacity building, technology development).\u00a0<\/span>\u201cBVRio is proud to launch the Hub. We see it as an important piece of the circular economy ecosystem, connecting and supporting a wide range of actors that play important roles in this space. In particular, we are glad to have designed an inclusive system that removes barriers to entry and gives access to smaller initiatives, such as the waste picker cooperatives that operate all over the world\u201d, said <\/span>Mauricio Moura Costa, CEO of BVRio.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Recognising that there is a huge diversity of circumstances, technologies, and approaches that can be used by projects in different parts of the world, the Hub does not assume that a \u2018one size fits all\u2019 approach can be defined at the outset. Instead, it adopts a \u2018learning-by-doing\u2019 approach and strives for continuous improvement of its requirements based on the experience learned with participating projects.\u00a0<\/span>To guide this learning process, an <\/span>Advisory Group<\/span><\/strong> was created with representation from both the \u2018buy-side\u2019 (corporates, donors, investors) as well as technical, scientific and social sector organisations interested in the social and environmental quality of the initiatives promoted. Confirmed participants include <\/span>the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)<\/em>, Yunus Environment Hub<\/em>, <\/span>Women in Informal Employment – Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO)<\/span><\/em>, UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)<\/em>, WRAP UK, Waste Aid, Regions for Climate Action (R20), Nestl\u00e9, The Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP)<\/em> programme of UK\u2019s DFID, and others. Circular Action Hub is also a member of the PREVENT Waste Alliance.<\/span><\/p>\n

We focus particularly on solutions that are strengthening and empowering marginalized people working as waste pickers and informal businesses in the plastic waste value chain.\u00a0 The Circular Action Hub can play an important role to facilitate funding to support such initiatives and improve social justice inside the system\u201d, <\/span>said Christina J\u00e4ger, Managing Director, Yunus Environment Hub<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs biodiversity losses increase, due to the impact of insufficient or inadequate waste management, specifically of plastic pollution, IUCN is thrilled to collaborate with the Circular Action Hub to ensure\u00a0it promotes positive environmental impacts in ecosystems currently threatened by waste pollution\u201d, commented <\/span>Joao Souza, Senior Programme Officer IUCN.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

At the time of the launch, <\/span>more than 100 projects from 35 countries<\/span><\/strong> are in the process of listing their initiatives in the Hub, with an aggregate capacity to recover more than <\/span>300,000 tonnes of waste materials from the environment<\/span><\/em>. Circular Action Hub expects this volume to increase substantially after the platform starts to connect initiatives with financial supporters and demonstrate the Hub as one more solution to the circularity challenge. In addition, the Hub has also included a series of projects with strong social impact, such as those creating economic opportunities for refugee camps in collaboration with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)<\/em> and Kenya Red Cross (KRCS)<\/em>, as well as with waste collector cooperatives in Brazil and India.\u00a0<\/span>BVRio hopes Circular Action Hub will become an effective and socially-inclusive circular economy mechanism enabling the cross-boundary support of projects through direct performance-based payments for the environmental services of collection, sorting and appropriate destination of waste materials that today pollute our environment.<\/span><\/p>\n
