Rio de Janeiro, 10\u00a0January 2018<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Today,\u00a0BVRio\u00a0published a\u00a0practical\u00a0guide\u00a0to facilitate conducting Due Diligence of\u00a0tropical timber products. The\u00a0guide, who profiles Liberia, follows the publication of a first guide, published in October 2017, profiling\u00a0Brazil and Ghana<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The objective of these\u00a0series of\u00a0practical\u00a0guides is to summarise the main documents that need to be collected, and how to interpret them, in order to conduct due diligence of timber consignments to be imported from different countries into the US and European markets.\u00a0It also provides a summary of the main risks associated with timber legality that the due diligence must address, for each individual country.<\/p>\n

These series of\u00a0guides complement\u00a0BVRio\u00a0Due Diligence and Risk Assessment system<\/a>, an online system to assist timber traders in conducting the due diligence of individual timber consignments.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0illegal production and trade of tropical timber is one of the main drivers of environmental degradation worldwide, leading to loss of habitats and biodiversity, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, human rights abuses and corruption.<\/p>\n

The enforcement of legality by some countries (e.g.\u00a0the EU Timber Regulation \u2013\u00a0EU TR1<\/a>, the\u00a0US Lacey Act\u00a0<\/a>2008\u00a0and Australia\u2019s Illegal Logging Prohibition Act) requires traders and operators to conduct their own due diligence on the timber they import into these markets. In parallel, initiatives such as the EU\u2019s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT<\/a>)\u00a0have helped to increase capacity to implement these laws.<\/p>\n

The ability to conduct due diligence, however, is hindered by various barriers.\u00a0This\u00a0guide\u00a0summarises the main documents that need to be collected, and how to interpret them, in order to conduct due diligence of timber consignments to be imported from different countries into the US and European markets.\u00a0It also provides a\u00a0summary of the main risks associated with timber legality that the due diligence must address, for Liberia.<\/p>\n

The main objective of these series of practical guides and of BVRio Responsible Timber Exchange is to enable wood traders to\u00a0screen out illegal timber from their supply base and, through demand-side pressure, help combat illegality in the sector.<\/p>\n
