The objective of the guide is to summarise the main documents that need to be collected, and how to interpret them, in order to conduct due diligence of timber consignments to be imported from different countries into the US and European markets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-827 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/bvrio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DD-Peru-243x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bvrio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DD-Peru-243x300.png 243w, https:\/\/www.bvrio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DD-Peru.png 603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/>The guide complements BVRio\u00a0Due Diligence and Risk Assessment system, an online system to assist timber traders in conducting the due diligence of individual timber consignments.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0illegal production and trade of tropical timber is one of the main drivers of environmental degradation worldwide, leading to loss of habitats and biodiversity, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, human rights abuses and corruption. The enforcement of legality by some countries (e.g. the EU Timber Regulation \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/forests\/timber_regulation.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU TR1<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestlegality.org\/policy\/us-lacey-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Lacey Act\u00a0<\/a>2008\u00a0and Australia\u2019s Illegal Logging Prohibition Act) requires traders and operators to conduct their own due diligence on the timber they import into these markets. In parallel, initiatives such as the EU\u2019s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flegt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FLEGT<\/a>)\u00a0have helped to increase capacity to implement these laws.<\/p>\n<p>The ability to conduct due diligence, however, is hindered by various barriers.\u00a0This\u00a0guide\u00a0summarises the main documents that need to be collected, and how to interpret them, in order to conduct due diligence of timber consignments to be imported from different countries into the US and European markets.\u00a0It also provides a\u00a0summary of the main risks associated with timber legality that the due diligence must address, for different countries.<\/p>\n<p>The main objective of this practical guide and of BVRio Responsible Timber Exchange is to enable wood traders to\u00a0<strong>screen out illegal timber<\/strong>\u00a0from their supply base and, through demand-side pressure,\u00a0<strong>help combat illegality in the sector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"null\" style=\"text-align: left;\">BVRio Due Diligence and Risk Assessment system<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BVRio\u00a0Due Diligence and Risk Assessment System\u00a0is an online system created to assist buyers and traders to conduct due diligence and\u00a0<strong>assess the risk of illegality<\/strong>\u00a0of specific consignments of timber products.
