For the past decade BVRio has been at the forefront of developing market mechanisms to incentivise producers, such as food and drink companies, to work with the informal waste collection sector to safely, effectively, and profitably remove solid waste from the environment. These initiatives now have a global reach and have evolved over time to help meet new legislation and to utilise new technology.

The objective of this practical guide is to summarise the main documents that need to be collected, and how to interpret them, in order to conduct due diligence of timber consignments to be imported from the Republic of Congo into the US and European markets. It also provides a summary of the main risks associated with timber legality that the due diligence must address, for the Republic of Congo.

The guide, initially published in January 2021, has been updated with information about the Open Timber Portal (OTP), a free online platform designed by the World Resources Institute. The goal of the OTP, as that of BVRio’s Due Diligence guides, is to incentivise legality in the timber sector, by facilitating access to information.

CHINESE VERSION Lesser-known and lesser-used species refer in this booklet to under-utilised timber species from Ghana that have similar properties to other popular species.

There are more than 50,000 species of timber in the world, but only a small proportion of these are used commercially. Currently, Ghana has nearly 90 species that are regularly exploited and traded as timber. Lesser-known & lesser-used species can have similar and even better performance for some specific end-uses; they can also have a more distinctive and unique appearance compared to more popular ones. Using these species is not only a good business decision but also has the potential to improve livelihoods and protect biodiversity.

The guide is part of the series that was first launched in 2017 with guides profiling Brazil and Ghana. The series of guides summarises the main documents that evidence legality, and how to interpret them for each country, in order for buyers to conduct document-based due diligence of timber consignments to be imported into the US and European markets.

The guide profiling Peru includes a brief description of the legality framework and the organisations involved in the forest and timber sector. It also includes a summary of the main documents along the supply chain and the main risks regarding illegality in the country, and shows real samples of these documents and how to read them, flagging what to be aware of when reviewing them.

While the forest sector is at the centre of international concerns about the sustainable management of forest resources, the negative effects of the pandemic on the forest sector should not overshadow the crucial role of forests in securing the livelihoods on which local people depend.

BVRio, in collaboration with ATIBT and support from UK Aid under the Forest Governance, Markets and Climate Programme, carried out a study to ensure a better understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on the forest sector in the Republic of Congo.

Actively restored tropical forests recover above ground biomass faster than areas left to regenerate naturally after being logged, according to new research led by the Universities of Dundee and Aberdeen and ETH Zürich’s Department of Environmental Systems Science. The research, published in Science, has its origins in work that Dundee’s Professor Mark Cutler and researchers now at Nottingham University carried out in Borneo almost 25 years ago. He led the project alongside colleagues at the University of Aberdeen, and ETH Zürich’s Department of Environmental Systems Science with the support of the SE Asia Rainforest Research Partnership (SEARRP).

While concerns about accelerating global warming preoccupy the public—as one can observe from the recent school strikes as protest against too few climate protection efforts—the Paris Agreement on Climate Change is starting to take effect in several areas of our planet. Yet, while in Europe, levels of carbon dioxide emissions are declining, in order to reach the 2 goal and even more the 1.5 goal of the agreement, global climate protection efforts have to be strengthened considerably. This becomes even more urgent as concentrations of methane, which is another very potent greenhouse gas besides carbon dioxide, have increased in an unexpectedly strong way in recent years. (...) Although the chapters in the book focus on the joint effects of climate policy, it is straightforward to apply the models and techniques used in this book also to joint production in other fields, for instance to research on philanthropy, performing arts, green goods consumption, terrorism, and military alliances.

This paper highlights the risks inherent in issuing carbon credits
for project scale emissions reductions relative to an estimate of
what would have otherwise occurred – which is the basis of the
UN’s Clean Development Mechanism – in the absence of an overall
sectoral or national emissions budget within which carbon credit
issuance would be accounted for through rigorous and transparently
monitored double-entry bookkeeping.
