BVRio contributes to the debate on the Voluntary Carbon Market at the Annual Meeting of the GCF Task Force in Manaus

The development of new models for environmental conservation and respect to traditional populations was the focus of the debates during the 12th Annual Meeting of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCF Task Force), which took place in the Brazilian Amazon Capital, Manaus, last week.

On Friday, March 18, BVRio Director of Forests and Public Policy, Beto Mesquita, was a key speaker on the discussion panel ‘Subnational Systems of Access to the Voluntary Carbon Market’. The panel was an opportunity for the Brazilian Federal States to define its governance model on the voluntary carbon market. Beto contributed to the discussions on the importance of the private initiative’s role in the chain of activities related to the voluntary carbon markets. He said it is essential that the future State’s governance system does not impose undue restrictions on underway projects and private initiatives, and does not become an obstacle to attracting new private investments from the voluntary carbon market.

During the event, BVRio also participated in a discussion with the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS) about the project ‘Unlocking and Leveraging Low Emissions Development’ in the Amazon. The project aims to promote regional integration and interchange to adopt effective measures to reduce and prevent deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, enabling the States of the region to access resources from the carbon and emissions reduction market. BVRio will coordinate and oversee the implementation of the actions for the State of Rondônia, as the implementing partner of the State’s Environmental Development Secretariat.

The general meeting resulted in the drafting of the Manaus Plan of Action (MAP), which will guide the GCF’s strategy in the coming years, focusing on finding solutions for the sustainable development of tropical forest regions and complex issues such as social inequalities.
