BVRio and SOBRE launch updated platform to boost ecosystem restoration efforts across Brazil

BVRio and the Brazilian Society for Ecological Restoration (SOBRE) launched today the latest version of the ‘Vitrine da Restauração’, a national platform that brings together data, practitioners, and restoration services to support the recovery of degraded areas and help advance the implementation of Brazil’s Forest Code. The launch took place during the 1st State Meeting on the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) and Environmental Regularisation Programme (PRA) at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro.

The update comes at a pivotal moment for Brazil’s environmental agenda. States are making progress in processing the mandatory registry for all rural properties, and in putting regularisation programmes into operation, which define how degraded areas must be restored, how native vegetation should be recovered, and how legal mechanisms such as Legal Reserve compensation can be used.

“The Vitrine has become a strategic tool for Brazil’s environmental policy by providing unprecedented visibility over the restoration supply chain. With this level of information, governments can plan more effectively, funders can identify credible projects, and businesses working in the sector can access new opportunities. It connects those looking to invest with those capable of delivering results on the ground, bringing more efficiency and scale to restoration efforts nationwide.” Roberta del Giudice, BVRio Director of Forests and Public Policy.

With a more intuitive layout and a significantly expanded database, the platform enables users to add their restoration initiatives, identify priority restoration areas, locate nurseries and seed collectors, find service providers, and map ongoing projects. The Vitrine consolidates a wide range of information, supporting public managers, landowners, technical organisations and investors, and creating the conditions needed to deliver the National Restoration Plan (Planaveg) 2025–2028 and achieve Brazil’s goal of restoring 12 million hectares by 2030.

“BVRio’s support was absolutely crucial. The team brought a deep understanding of how the restoration chain actually functions in practice and the real barriers states face. This territorial perspective, which BVRio understands so well, helped us define the filters, categories and prioritisation logic of the platform. The Vitrine has reached this stage because we combined science, technology, and a robust institutional partnership.” Alessandra Nasser Caiafa, SOBRE Director.

The initiative was developed with technical and financial support from PlanaFlor, a project coordinated by BVRio and FBDS with support from the Government of Norway. PlanaFlor works with the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB) and federal ministries to validate priority restoration areas, strengthen regulations, and improve the governance of environmental regularisation.

Integrating geospatial data, local capacity and on-the-ground actors, the new Vitrine da Restauração becomes a key tool for unlocking projects, informing public policy, and linking restoration efforts to opportunities in the low-carbon economy, including payments for ecosystem services (PES), Forest Reserve Credits (CRA) and forest carbon initiatives.

What’s new in the updated version

In addition to a complete redesign of the interface, the new version includes many substantial improvements:

  • A fully revamped modular architecture, enabling the inclusion of new states, data layers and tools.
  • Expanded modules covering six major areas: nurseries and seedling production; seed collection; restoration services; projects; territorial movements and networks; education, research and public policy.
  • Updated and quality-checked national datasets, integrating information from Brazil’s leading restoration networks.
  • Improved mapping tools, with thematic filters by biome, type of actor, operational capacity and location.
  • A simplified registration process, allowing new actors to update their information and broaden the platform’s territorial coverage.
  • A much-enhanced user experience, with more intuitive navigation, advanced search functions and clearer presentation of each region’s restoration capacities.

The new version of the Vitrine da Restauração is now available for consultation and new registrations on SOBRE’s website.

Invitation to a technical webinar

To support users and encourage uptake across Brazil by all the restoration supply chain actors, a technical webinar will be held on 18 December 2025 at 4 pm (BRT), introducing the new platform, its functionalities, and practical applications for public policy, investment and project implementation.

The webinar is especially relevant for:

  • Technical teams from state and municipal governments (CAR, PRA, environmental secretariats)
  • Rural producers and agricultural associations
  • Nurseries, seed collectors and restoration service providers
  • Universities, research centres and rural extension institutions
  • Restoration projects, regional movements and community groups
  • Civil society organisations
  • Companies and investors interested in PES, CRA and carbon markets
  • Cooperatives and local productive arrangements linked to restoration
  • Environmental consultancies, forestry engineers and field specialists
  • Journalists and communicators working on socio-environmental topics
