BVRio coordinates media workshop to mark the Brazilian Forest Code 10th Anniversary

Between 23 May and 2 June, the Forest Code Observatory (OCF), of which BVRio is a member, is promoting ‘Forest Code +10’, a week of debates to mark the 10th anniversary of the publication of the law that protects native vegetation in Brazil, the ‘New Forest Code’. The event opens on 23 May with a workshop aimed at journalists, ‘(Un)covering the Forest Code’, organised by BVRio.

BVRio participates in new Brazil Coalition Task Force

In September, the Brazil Coalition created a Task Force – Força-Tarefa da Coalizão Brasil – (FT) dedicated to the Forest Code. One of the main purposes of the new group is to promote the alignment of the many discussions involving the Code that take place in the different FTs and Dialogue Forums of the movement.

Since November 2020, BVRio has been participating in preparatory meetings for the implementation of the Amazon Forest Forum, a regional forum of the Forest Dialogue, whose objective is to become a reference space for the construction of solutions for the protection and sustainable use of forests in the Brazilian Amazon.

New Forest Code approved in the Republic of Congo

With over 65% of the Republic of Congo covered by forest – an area almost the size of the United Kingdom – it is vitally important that sustainable forest management practices take place in the country, both to improve livelihoods and protect the forest. The main legislation to do this is the country’s Forest Code; in July 2020, a new version of the code received presidential approval after eight years of revision. This is an important milestone towards a more sustainable and inclusive forestry and timber sector.
